The 80 Watt Battery Charging Unit (also known as the ' Tiny Tim ' ) was used extensively by Signals sections of the British Airborne to charge the 12 volt wireless batteries. In combat conditions the set was strapped in place behind the passenger seat and could be operated directly from the rear of the jeep.
The set consists a petrol four stroke engine directly coupled to the alternator both of which are supported by anti-vibration spring mountings on a sheet metal base which forms the top of the petrol tank. A metal full wave rectifier, mounted on the alternator frame, is connected between the alternator and the DC outputs.
A guard frame and canvas cover protect the unit with the cover having a quick release carrying handle. Packed underneath the cover there are the silencer and flexible exhaust pipe. There are two insulated terminals for the DC output and a pair of brass fuse terminals.
The above set is an early type which has the additional AC connections. Also known as the upper set.
A comprehensive spares and tools box completes the set enabling field repairs to be undertaken.
